Richard Pulley Comments on Firewall Battery Installation, Extended Luggage Compartment and Landing Gear
The firewall battery installation has been a popular modification on
C-180/185s in Alaska for many years. It fits the C-195 firewall very nicely
as well. Removal of the original battery and associated wiring netted a
reduction of 17 pounds. The battery is an Odyssey Hawker SBS-J which is an
FAA-PMA certified sealed aircraft battery for Piper models PA-18 and PA-19.
It was approved on the C-195 with a Form 337 Field Approval through the
Anchorage FSDO.
Bill Milton with The 195 Factory, LLC did a beautiful job of fabrication and
installation of both extended baggage compartments. They are approved
installations on the C-195 TCDS. Rear fuselage access is provided via a
hinged rear panel secured with Dzus fasteners in the right side extended
baggage.
This landing gear comparison photo shows heavy gear installed on the
airplane with a light gear leg standing beside the plane. The heavy gear is
7/8" thick and the light is 3/4" thick. The most obvious difference is in
the narrower shape of the legs especially toward the lower end. The
reduction in weight is 28 pounds total with the light gear.
