330HP vs 275HP Jake

I am considering the purchase of a 195 with the "big engine" a none turbo 330HP Jacobs. Does anyone know the difference in performance and operating cost of a 195 with the 275 and 330HP engines?

Oil Press Rises w/Temp?

At 145F, my oil pressure is in the high 70s.  At 180F, my oil pressure is at the top of the green (90 psi).  What's up with that?

BTW, in 5 years I've never seen my temps a high as this last flight over Kansas.  There was a nasty temp inversion, at 4500MSL it was 85F, at 5500 it was 95F.  Add to that a long taxi after the refueling stop, well I kept it at 120IAS and eventually cooled down once I got over 8000'...

Ignition issues

Hello everyone.  My annual turned out to be a labor of love.  Two cylinders needed new everything.  They are back on and we ran it the engine yesterday and found another issue.  Upon doing a run-up, switching the key from both to the mag, I had no drop what so ever in RPM, went back to both, switched the key to the "B" side and the engine was going to turn off and I switched it back to both before it could.  I did a second run-up. Same issue.  The engine cranked up fine.  Maybe we pulled a wire loose when we swung the engine on the first day of the annual and didn't notice it?  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Tail strut (again)

OK, I tried to do the right thing, I removed the chevy valve spring from my tail wheel strut. Now I am removing the strut a third time in 2 months because it keeps leaking around the copper crush gasket... Whats the secret to stop the leak around this gasket?... I am just about ready to go dig thru the garbage and find my chevy valve spring.

Help

Another issue with the CofA inspection on VLD.

Can anyone assist with elevator trim tab travel for the C195B (mine is serial no 16111). We have 195 P/C’s and LC-126 M/M’s but I’m not confident the travel limits given in the LC-126 manual would be the same for a 195B. I have seen other limits hand written in our manuals stating less tab travel for aircraft with the larger flaps and elevators.

Thanks in anticipation Mike

Maintenance

Hi All,

As we are working through the CofA process on VH-VLD we have decided that both the prop pitch and mixture control cabels are US and i was hoping that someone might give me a good source for replacements or have spare serviceable ones available.

P/n are:  0311031-2 for the pitch and 0311030-4 for the mixture

Turbocharger and Battery Changes

Hello All!  I recently managed to have two modifications to the 190/195 series aircraft approved.

Turbocharger equiped R-755 owners:  I recieved approval for changing out the original turbocharger for another similar unit.  The original turbos are difficult to overhaul due to some parts being extinct.  The AirResearch 406610-9015 is a drop in fit, and is used on several models of Bell 47 and Cessna T-210 aircraft.  They are both TE-06 family turbos, with the same area ratio.  Works fine.

After quite some time I have gotten an approval for the installation of an Odyssey PC-925 battery in place of the standard 35 series battery.  This installed on the original battery pedastal after removing the battery box.  These days the Concorde SLA might be an easier solution, but the Odyssey is one nice battery.

Interested parties are invited to e-mail me and I will provide further information concerning these modifications.  ( Eventually I will figure out how to upload pictures of this stuff!)

Spark plugs in here somewhere

Hello everyone,

I read a post in there, not so long ago, about some new spark plugs.  Someone had them for 20 dollars and some change.  Can anyone point to me who has them and contact info?  I need to get some on the way to put in two of my cylinders.  Thanks everyone for the help.

crack above and below door arm

Hello all. I have noticed two small horizontal cracks just above and below where the cabin door arm conects to the airplane.  Is there a fix for this?  What do I need to do?  It doesn't appear to be a huge problem but need to know what to do.

Thanks,

Bill K.

Annual Time, airframe maintenance manuals?

Hello everyone. It's time for the annual on my 195. It is 1949 with a Jacobs 245hp.  I have some manuals for the engine but no airframe manuals.  So my question is, can I use the ones we have on our web site for the L126?  At least the portions that actually apply to my airframe.  Just curious.  I appreciate any help or information you are able pass along.

Thanks,Bill K.

Interior

I did a lot of my interior myself and saved a lot of money. Here is what I did. I used Airtex fabrics and carpet. I removed the all the interior, oil tank cover and seats myself and stripped them. I found an award winning vintage car upholstery guy and had him fabricate the seats according to the original brochure photo I have. To save a little money I purchased stock Airtex side panels and had my guy add some extra stitching and custom pockets. The headline is pre-exisiting and was like new so I left it. I recovered the oil tank all the trim pieces that go around the panel, wing roots and spar. I purchased replacement instrument lights that work great with dimmers and red/white lenses. I had my guy make the carpet from the old one. I used a dark brown vinyl for the baggage compartment. The seats have a little extra trim out of aviation approved leather which is how the originals were according to the brochure. We replaced all the foam in the seats as it was deteriorated. I stripped and repainted the front seat bases and seat belt attachments with rustoleum brown. New seat belts from someplace back east. Can't remember where.

Total cash outlay was approx. $3500 plus my time for installation. Took me 8 weekends to install but I could do it much faster now that I have done one. The second time is always easier (no hurry on that though). I am sure the headliner would be a pain if I had to do that.

The handles are from late 40's Cadillac and I refinished all the placards.

Maintenance

Recently the subject of replacement vent window handle knobs came up. I researched this over the years and here is what I came up with. These knobs are plastic and crumble over time and owners find all sorts of replacements. The 195 Parts Catalog list the crank window parts as GM (Page 64 item 57). I never successful traced the GM part number listed but after going to  many auto shows it appears the handle and knob are 1938 to 1948 Chevy crank window handles. When my first crank window knob crumbled in the 1980's I kept the pieces (I never throw away original parts) and photographed it. See photo.

Although I have never found an exact replacement for the knob, antique Chevy reproduction parts have near matches.  "The Filling Station"  (www.filling station.com) has a good selection. The closest is their part number CR-189 handle and knob (CR-4 knob only) but it has a bronze insert. I elected to use the CR-3 or CR-89 all ivory knobs.
