WANTED - 195 to Buy

Hello 195ers:

I am very seriously looking to purchase a 195 as soon as I am able to find one close to what I am looking for.  I am reviewing those advertised online, but I realize there may be 195s not yet advertised, or owners contemplating selling, so I thought I would post a "wanted ad" here.

I am looking for a low-time to mid-time 195 in great condition with a modern panel.  I am not looking for a project, or a restoration, or a bargain at TBO.  I am very aware that I will inevitably sacrafice some preferences but, for what they're worth, my preferences are:  low-time to mid-time R755, no turbo, excellent exterior condition, excellent interior condition, no corrosion, no major damage history, no crosswind gear, modern IFR panel, center stack, dual-control, painted over polished-aluminum, locking tailwheel.

I am ready to travel to see 195s and I am ready to buy.  I will require a pre-buy inspection and would greatly appreciate the opportunity for me and possibly my instructor to spend some airtime with a 195 instructor if one is close enough to the airplane, to receive a proper check-out (after the sale).  If you are considering selling such a 195, or can point me in a direction, I would appreciate hearing from you.  Please reply to my email and I will reply quickly.  If you prefer phone, please email me for my phone numbers, or give me your number and I will call you quickly.  Thank you.

Lake Havasu Flyin Lunch, March 4

I received enough interest in flying to Lake Havasu KHII for lunch at the BBQ resturant that I set it up for about noon March 4.

Cactus flyin is March 2,3,4 so you might want want to make it to both. You can get more info at Cactusflyin.org.

Let me know if you can make it.

Rebuilding brake housing

For the members that are using the crosswind brake housings, we can now reline the cylinder area where it has been corroded by the brake fluid and "O" ring wear. We bore the cylinder and reline with a brass sleeve.

Insurance

I elected to stay with AUA and today I they sent me a quotation from Chartis. It was $320 less than last year for the same coverage. My rate for the last ten years has been higher than others so I asked AUA at renewal to try and get my rate in line with other 195's. Looks like they did.

Lake Havasu Flyin?

I am checking to see how much interest there is in having a flyin to Lake Havasu,KHII this Spring. There is a great BBQ resturant at the airport. I live near there and can help set it up.

I'd like your comments,

Baggage Compartment Weights

Folks, I have a C195B, 1952 that has an aux baggage compartment.  I have been told that the max weight for the aux baggage compartment is 50 pounds.  I have also been told that the main baggage compartment max weight is 148 pounds when utilizing the aux baggage compartment.  I am assumming that this means the total baggage weight permissible is 198 pounds.  Can anyone confirm or deny these figures?  Assumming the above is true and the aux baggage is not utilized what is the maximum weight that can be carried in the main baggage compartment? Still 148 pounds or a higher number?  I believe the number is closer to 200 pounds if you do not have the aux baggage compartment installed.  I am confused. Any verified info will be greatly appreciated.

Last Question:  People are always asking me how many 195's are still flying.  I do not know.  If anyone knows how many are still on the FAA registry and the worldwide number I would appreciate that bit of information.  Thank you all.

Hey, we're gettin some airspeed !

Many thanks to all of you that have donated recently to the Cessna 195 Foundation.  If you have tried to donate on-line with your credit card, and have been hassled by paypal, be persistant with your CC, and you will prevail.  Otherwise just avoid the hassle (and fees) and send a check to the International Cessna 190/195 Foundation, Inc. c/o 632 N. Tyler Road, St. Charles, IL. 60174. We are looking for a better pay on-line  system, but the fees are higher.  THANKS !!.

THANK YOU !!

David, Mike & Charmian, Larry, Philippe, Ron, Fred and a handful of others for your generous donations to the Cessna 190/195 Foundation.  Unfortunately, you are members of a very small segment of this wonderful organization dedicated to promoting the care and feeding of the finest.classic aircraft to ever grace the skies.  Sadly, the non-response of 99.9% of our colleagues has been under-whelming.

A donation of any amount helps.  It all adds up.  $1.95, $19.50?  It all counts!  It doesn't have to be $100 or $195.  Think about it, no one but us 195 owners are going to promote ownership of a 195.  In addition to this website, flying our 195s as much as possible, and promoting this great aircraft to other pilots and potential pilots, the publicity and goodwill generated by awarding aviation related scholarships will also "plant that seed" of desire to own a Cessna 195.

So, all you potential donors, hoist a few empty beer mugs to future 195 owners, and send the few bucks the beer would have cost to the Cessna 195 foundation.  SKAL !!

"Pancho" Barnes, 195 Owner?

I just netflixed "The Legend of Pancho Barnes, and the Happy Bottom Riding Club".   Turns out she and her last husband owned a 195.  Per the LA Times link below, they took it camping in Mexico in 1958.

Anyone know what the N Number was, or if it is still in the fleet?  The brief screen shot didn't show the entire number.

Insurance - Aviation Solutions, LLC

Hope to find everyone off to a healthy and happy new year!  I've noticed some talk on here about aviation insurance, so I thought I'd add a little something.

Some of you received letters from me in the mail.  If you didn't receive a letter and you'd like to know more about myself and our company, please notify me by phone or email, and I'll be more than happy to send you some information!

My husband and I hosted this last year's Annual Fly-In, and I met some of you there for the very first time.  Others, I've known since I was little!  I'm passionate about the 195, and the folks who they own, as I'm proud to have so many wonderful relationships with so many of you!

Happy Landings!

Jacobs parts R755 and R915

I aquired some Jacobs parts last fall and don't need all of them. The pistons I understand are the most desirable since they are for the 330HP R915

The following is a list of the parts that I have, they all appear to be new condition and most are still in the original packaging.

7 new pistons, part # 711B+15-R8

~100 piston rings (~5 1/4 inch OD)

40 oil control rings (~5 1/4 inch OD)

57 plugs part # 506-B

50 plugs part # 713 cs

50 studs part # 954+3

25 push rods part # 90112 (still in box)

32 push rods (still wrapped but not sure if they are the same as part # 90112)

~95 gaskets part # 30029

~ 75 gaskets

7 rocker arms (not sure if they are intake or exhaust)

31 rocker arm bearings

17 bushings

11 washers

5 gears ( see picture)

I'm willing to sell parts individualy and make me a resoanble offer since I would like to help fellow 195 owners. Contact me at gatewayaviation@yahoo.com

AUA Insurance

You may recall AUA was acquired by a Birmingham AL company just over a year ago. Although I have other insurance options, I stayed with the merged entity and signed up for another year last summer. I just got a cancellation notice from the underwriter for failure to pay the premium. It was paid last summer. The "AUA" agent advised me on January 11th that it was an administrative error at AUA and the underwriter will be issuing a retraction of the cancellation. I havn't received any such retraction and per the Notice my policy was canceled today.

I am all for giving them some time to sort this out. But needless to say, I feel a bit uncomfortable about the situation. Hopefully this is a one time glitch.

Anyone else have any positive or negative experiences?

I'll keep you posted. Thanks

Mike

Cessna 195 seral number 7004

Recently our CAF Wing received three Cessna 190/195 books in a donation. Being the only member that owned a 195, they were given to me. After looking through them I realized that they were the original flight test data books, signed and dated by the men who did the test flights. The 195 book turned out to be all the test data form its initial test flights. This is aircraft which flew all of those flights. (Note the Cessna 140 style rudder) One of the things that caught my eye, while browsing through the data, was that this plane did 265 MPH corrected indicated air speed in a dive test.
I sold my 195 just a few weeks later and donated these books to Barron Aviation for their archives.

carefull with that drill bit

When working on mechanical things, they seem to run in streaks, lately , its been very badly drilled rivets.  When an airplane has a structural failure, it started with a rivet (fastener)failure, and that failure was 90 degrees to the rivet, once it and its close associates allow the skin to move, then next occurs the failure of the formers and stringers, followed by the tearing of the skin.  Many think a rivet works like a "C" clamp, and as long as the hole is covered by the head and the buck tial, its fine.  Nothing is further from the truth.  When removing the head of the rivet, and beneath you find holes that look like the figure 8, or a daisy, then that rivet was doing nothing but keeping the rain out, several in the same area, and the risk of a failure is greaty increased.  I know that many of our planes have been apart several times, but this means to me, that special care in drilling should be taken, If the holes get too large, then one size larger rivet generally works, 2 sizes larger, and the edge margin is not legal many times, too much of this, and the plane can be a total loss, In addition, fasteners of varoius sizes and design all in a row, look bad.   Fasteners only covering up the hole with their head look much better, but are a serious safety flaw.   43-13 has a lot of data on this for a good reason,  And if you just punch the rivet out by drilling till it sinks the bit up the the chuck, likely you are not getting the result we need to keep these things flying for the next 60 years.

MANIFOLD PRESSURE

On take off in cold weather I have been looking closely at the readings , and notice I'm making about 26 inches , at W O T , with about 2,350  RPM . Of course I back that off to maybe 22 inches and 2,100 RPM on climb out , and then maybe 21 inches and 1,950 for cruise .

The good book says 275 HP results from 23 inches  at 2,300 rpm at take of , under standard conditions .

I realize that cooler air permits more power but my question is - is there a linear relationship between MP and power , other things being equal ?  If so I would be making about 310 HP at WOT . It sure makes for sprightly departures !

There sure is -as we all know - a huge difference between solo take offs in the winter , and full seat /full fuel / high temp/zero breeze take off runs in the Summer ! When the weather gods smile , winter flying can be sooo pleasurable .

Flight Analysis Tool App

I just recently found a pretty nifty flight analysis tool for iPhone or iPad that I thought I'd pass along in case anyone is interested. It's a free app you can download for your i-device. It'll work as long as you have either the internal or an external GPS such as the Bad Elf. I just had the opportunity to use it today when I went out to do some landings. You can click on the URL below and go to their website to learn more about it. Below is a shot of the flight I did today.

Windshield Question

All:  I have read all of the postings about windshields, and I understand that the general preference is for Cee Bailey.  I have checked and the GLAP windshield is $200 less, and the freight would be a lot less.  Is it really worth the difference?  If you all say so, I will go with CB, just wondering if there is really that much difference?

Thanks,
