Cessna Sensations - new book

I recently became aware of a book that focuses on the earlier Cessnas including the 195s.  Many similar  books share the same photos that we've seen, but this one had a few new (to me at least) shots.  I recommend it as a good coffee table companion.

If you're interested you can buy it online at http://www.vintageflyer.com/Cessna-Sensations.php

Bas Inc. Tailpull Handles

I'm in the process of ordering a set of Bas Inc. Reel harnesses for the front seats of my 195. I have the Bas Inc. tailpull handles on my Cessna 170B and find them very useful. I'm thinking of ordering them for the 195, how do they perform on the Cessna 195. Lance

Beau Bradley's Response to West Yellowstone Routing Requests

There have been a couple of discussion threads addressing potential routes to West Yellowstone.  I asked Beau if he could make a suggestion based on his familiarity with the area.

Here's his response and an invitation to discuss alternatives:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A route suggestion to those who want to limit their mountain flying.

From the east go KBIL, KLVS, KBZN, 9S5 and then turn south down the Madison Valley .  Approximately 30NM south of KEKS cross over Raynolds Pass (6836’) to U53 then east to KWYS.

Anyone can contact me on my cell if they want to pick my brain about any other routes.  My cell is 406-596-3100.

Cessna 195 at Disneyland

Who knew there was a 195 at Disneyland?  HuffingtonPost.com had a photo essay on Stephen Colbert (I didn't know who he was either, but you can read about him if you click here.) and his family's visit to Disneyland.  Click here for the brief story and photos.

Turbocharger and Battery Changes

Hello All!  I recently managed to have two modifications to the 190/195 series aircraft approved.

Turbocharger equiped R-755 owners:  I recieved approval for changing out the original turbocharger for another similar unit.  The original turbos are difficult to overhaul due to some parts being extinct.  The AirResearch 406610-9015 is a drop in fit, and is used on several models of Bell 47 and Cessna T-210 aircraft.  They are both TE-06 family turbos, with the same area ratio.  Works fine.

After quite some time I have gotten an approval for the installation of an Odyssey PC-925 battery in place of the standard 35 series battery.  This installed on the original battery pedastal after removing the battery box.  These days the Concorde SLA might be an easier solution, but the Odyssey is one nice battery.

Interested parties are invited to e-mail me and I will provide further information concerning these modifications.  ( Eventually I will figure out how to upload pictures of this stuff!)

New Member

Hi all,

Would like just to introduce myself as a new owner of a C195 in Australia.  This aircraft is here in Wangaratta, Victoria but will move to Kilcoy about 45min drive from Brisbane in QLD where it will join another C195 already positioned up there.

Hope to meet some C195 folks in Oskosh next year.

THE WAY TO WEST YELLOWSTONE (part 2)

At the moment we plan to spend the night in Cheyenne. Next day  it will be V118 to LAR, V 85 to MBW, V 6 to OCS, V328 to JAC, V520 to Driggs-Reed (KDIJ) then direct to WYS. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can fly the valleys .

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Spark plugs in here somewhere

Hello everyone,

I read a post in there, not so long ago, about some new spark plugs.  Someone had them for 20 dollars and some change.  Can anyone point to me who has them and contact info?  I need to get some on the way to put in two of my cylinders.  Thanks everyone for the help.

Insurance Issue

Firstly, I do NOT have an insurance issue (knock on wood) but this question has been discussed on other type club forums AND currently on AOPA.  We have recently had a member experience an engine failure with a resultant emergency landing with damage to the airframe. In previous discussions (on a Beech forum), a Bonanza owner who had the same situation, was sharing the info that he was quite upset that the insurance company was only going to fix the damage to his airframe with NO help with the engine. He thought he was owed an engine. Part of me thought the insurance company was not inthe business of "warranteeing" engines and at that time, I thought that was a reasonable position. If the engine craters and takes out a cowl.....different story, part of the fix and should be covered (in my view). What about the prop? The prop was fine before it hit terra firma. Covered?

Not meaning to apply this to any current issue but I always wanted to know the "real deal". Likewise, at OSH, sitting around the fake campfire, John Barron mentioned that a garden variety ground loop is about $75k, and insurance companies have the option to buy the plane if the damage is over 75% of the insured value. I think I might be kicking my hull up a notch. BTW....the folks on the AOPA board are saying 50% damage causes the same concern, but maybe our insurors are a little more appreciative of our fine aircraft.

Anyone Going To Blakesburg?

We're planning on taking 5PL to Blakesburg for the AAA Fly-in over Labor Day weekend. Anyone else planning to go? It would be fun to get a group of 195's lined up at that event. We've never been there but it looks like there will be a lot of great old planes. It's only about an hour and a half from here, so practically next door.

If anyone is interested, here's the website: http://antiqueairfield.com/

Annual Time, airframe maintenance manuals?

Hello everyone. It's time for the annual on my 195. It is 1949 with a Jacobs 245hp.  I have some manuals for the engine but no airframe manuals.  So my question is, can I use the ones we have on our web site for the L126?  At least the portions that actually apply to my airframe.  Just curious.  I appreciate any help or information you are able pass along.

So far, everyone that I have heard of has been able to get out of a 195 if need be, some took some kicking, but there is a chance someone could be trapped,  I have been watching for the left hatch and supporting formers, and they are hard to find, soooo, I have been thinking , I do fit thru the hole where the left big window is, and if it and its frame were gone, a piece of coiled up canvas laying in the bottom of the opening that could be thrown out and  would serve as protection to take away the sharp edges of the fuselage skin where one could go (head first ) out the window.  The reason I am bring this up, is I have been looking for a way to secure the window and the window frame as a one piece assembly into the recess where it lives, yet be easily removable in a hurry, look pretty, and hold the assembly tight enough to eliminate wind noise, I am looking for ideas here, any thoughts,   ??

I wanna 195

Hi all,

I'm new to this organization and am looking to buy a 195 in the coming months. I realize i have some research to do on my own but would appreciate any information pertinent to buying/owning one of these beautiful birds.

Primarily I'm interested in parts of the airplane I should pay particular attention to as I begin looking at candidates for purchase.... ADs, corrosion prone areas, mechanical peculiarities, any particular pros and cons to owning a 195.

Please feel free to email or call me.

Late last year Kevin McAtee suggested we add an interactive map to the website that shows the geographic locations of members.  So when planning cross country flights, for example, members can click on a dot and be provided  contact information for that member.

Well, it's finally available at the link below.  Links are also on the Members Menu under "Map"  and  on the Member Listing Page as a link on city, state/country.

Let me know any questions or suggestions.  And keep those suggestions coming...

Interior

I did a lot of my interior myself and saved a lot of money. Here is what I did. I used Airtex fabrics and carpet. I removed the all the interior, oil tank cover and seats myself and stripped them. I found an award winning vintage car upholstery guy and had him fabricate the seats according to the original brochure photo I have. To save a little money I purchased stock Airtex side panels and had my guy add some extra stitching and custom pockets. The headline is pre-exisiting and was like new so I left it. I recovered the oil tank all the trim pieces that go around the panel, wing roots and spar. I purchased replacement instrument lights that work great with dimmers and red/white lenses. I had my guy make the carpet from the old one. I used a dark brown vinyl for the baggage compartment. The seats have a little extra trim out of aviation approved leather which is how the originals were according to the brochure. We replaced all the foam in the seats as it was deteriorated. I stripped and repainted the front seat bases and seat belt attachments with rustoleum brown. New seat belts from someplace back east. Can't remember where.

Total cash outlay was approx. $3500 plus my time for installation. Took me 8 weekends to install but I could do it much faster now that I have done one. The second time is always easier (no hurry on that though). I am sure the headliner would be a pain if I had to do that.

The handles are from late 40's Cadillac and I refinished all the placards.

CF-MLB Accident

I have some unfortunate news to deliver regarding our CF-MLB.  On Monday August 9, I experienced a severe engine problem that required an emergency landing on a logging road in Northern Saskatchewan 33 NM short of my destination La Ronge (CYVC).  As the road was quite narrow my left wing clipped the trees and I was pulled into the bush off the road.  Needless to say the aircraft is severely damaged, more than likely written off.

I was not hurt at all, not a scratch or bruise although my back is a little sore on the right side.  I did have just enough time to call the FSS in YVC that I was going down and my distance from town.   I was later able to contact an overflying aircraft and relay my exact GPS coordinates.  After about 2 1/2 hours being bitten by mosquitoes and black flies the local RCMP finally located me.

On Tuesday we returned to the aircraft to recover it and to our relief, found there was no further damage done to it by the locals as it was too far off the main road.  After 6 hours we were on our way back to YVC with the remains on the back of a truck and trailer and returned to town well after dark.

I am now going through the insurance process which seems to be going smoothly.  We are planning to rebuild if possible.

We are still planning to go to Yellowstone however I know we will be flying down the highway instead.  See you there.

Maintenance

Recently the subject of replacement vent window handle knobs came up. I researched this over the years and here is what I came up with. These knobs are plastic and crumble over time and owners find all sorts of replacements. The 195 Parts Catalog list the crank window parts as GM (Page 64 item 57). I never successful traced the GM part number listed but after going to  many auto shows it appears the handle and knob are 1938 to 1948 Chevy crank window handles. When my first crank window knob crumbled in the 1980's I kept the pieces (I never throw away original parts) and photographed it. See photo.

Although I have never found an exact replacement for the knob, antique Chevy reproduction parts have near matches.  "The Filling Station"  (www.filling station.com) has a good selection. The closest is their part number CR-189 handle and knob (CR-4 knob only) but it has a bronze insert. I elected to use the CR-3 or CR-89 all ivory knobs.

Notes on "More Oshkosh Photos"

There are a total of 54 photos listed under the "Responses"

link at:

http://www.cessna195.org/Hangar/responses.cfm?id=32037885

They were taken on Thursday, July 29th at Oshkosh during a

quick one day visit.

I spent most of the afternoon visiting with John Barron and

the crowd who stopped by to talk about Cessna 195 restorations

with him.

I decided to try to take a picture of every 195 / 190 that I saw

parked at Oshkosh that day along with a few others that I thought

were very interesting as I departed at the end of the day.  Hopefully,

what I uploaded gives those who were unable to attend a small

snapshot of the experience.

Uploaded photos are 1/4 size of the originals.  Clicking once on the

thumbnail photo should give a full screen size display, and clicking

again on that full size photo should display all of the pixels for a

more detailed look.  If anyone wants a copy of the full size original

of one that was posted, let me know and I will try to upload it to another

site for you to download.

Applegate Fly-in

For those in the MO, IA, NE, IL, KS area, and have no place to fly their 195's tomorrow (Sunday, 8 August), there is a little fly-in at Harve and Carolyn Applegate's airport at Queen City, MO (just a little north of Kirksville), identifier 15MO, starts at 2p, food will be served just bring a lawn chair. I bought my plane from Harve and he took my money and bought that beautiful Waco cabin bi-plane we all walk by as we walk north at OSH (near the Hangar Cafe).  They are great people. Harve is very active in AAA and there will be lots of planes up there lining his very nice grass strip, which is just west of the highway that runs south out of Queen City. .

I am going to burn up some of that cheap Hannibal fuel and fly up there with a few friends.

Important - West Yellowstone Date is Near - Action Needed!

Hello Again Everyone,

Time is flying by and we are only a little over a month away from the West Yellowstone Fly-In, September 15th – 19th.  The Holiday Inn (www.DoYellowstone.com)  406 646-7365, has informed me that everything outside of our block is sold out and our blocked rooms are due to be released August 17th.  September is still considered Yellowstone’s tourist season so please make your reservations as soon as you can, we don’t want to see anyone left out. If you have any problems ask to speak to Shellie and she will get you taken care of; it sounds like there are mostly double queen rooms and King spa rooms left.

Don’t forget, Ron has added a very user friendly online registration process (www.cessna195.org/events/Flyin2010/) that makes it quick and easy.  Just don’t forget you have to make your room reservations separately.

Or, you can still print and complete the paper registration form at the same link and send it to us with your $150.00 per person registration fee by August 15th (the earlier the better).

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Beau or Deb.

Exhaust Odor

Just put nine hours on the airplane recently and I have noticed a subtle exhaust smell on my clothes after I'm out of the airplane. This is my way of describing that I don't notice the exhaust while in flight. And my hangar neighbors have already suggested that my head may be up my exhaust pipe. Anyway, the belly exhaust vent has been closed due to temperatures aloft and the carbon monoxide detector is normal. My best guess is that the propeller wash is carrying the exhaust up and around the fuselage to the left wing root and its getting in through the fairing. I'm not really sure if this is a new issue or I just have not noticed it in the past.

What's your thought?
