Maintenance

Its Saturday morning and I am waiting for a customer to show up, and I just thought of this.  A few days ago, I found another oil temp capulairy tube with the shielding burned where it had gotten into something electrical .  Often I find these tubes bunched in with electrical lines, and running very close to the back side of circuit breakers, switches etc.  These lines need to be well secured , well insulated, and kept well clear of electrical stuff.  The shielding goes directly to ground, they make it go IFR inside the airplane and stink!  mercy! ,  do it smell!      We are fortunate that we do not have moving yokes behind the panel, but still, in general, the back side of the panel needs better attention than many have gotten in the last 60 years!

N1LE Destin FL to Paris TX

Left Destin with 20-30 headwind and 700' and 3-5  was just about the same as the day before. I finally got over a 1000' agl about 100 east of Paris

Had a heck of a storm last night 2" rain with lightning and thunder.

Clear here tonight. Headed to Guyman then onto CO Springs tomorrow, from there will be decided with latest weather

Having fun and learing a little more about N1LE, so far have not found anything not to like.

break pucks needed and oil filter

Hi all. I'm about to put some new tires on my 195 and would like to get some new pucks if someone has some I can buy or let me know where I can get some pretty quick.  Tires will be done Friday, I hope!

Also, since I'm going to fly from OPN to Carson City, NV end of May thru first part of June, I would like to put an oil filter on. I understand Airwolf is a good one to install and comes with the STC.  Are there any others as good or better for the money?  Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bill K. (3873V)

1400 TBO?

I was just on Air Repair's website. They are the Certificate holder for Jacobs engines. They have a bunch of new modernization improvements they have been working on for our engines. The show a service bulletin that has extended the TBO to 1400 hours. Is this all engines or just newly overhauled engines by them with their upgrades. It is very interesting to see the list of changes they have made. Take a look.

General Purpose Grease

Hi Folks;
Spring is just around the corner and I can't wait, what with all this global warming piled up against my hangar door. With that political incorrectness out of the way. What grease do most of you use? If I read the LC 126 handbook I need Three grease guns AS-5, AS-6 and AS-33. Is this what most use?

Club

Columbia, June 4th - 6th

The club house at Columbia (O22) has been reserved for the weekend of June 4th and I am making arrangements for a catered BBQ for Saturday night (unless someone else has a great idea or wants to volunteer and cook for us). There is some information on the gathering in the Events section. I will be emailing out more information shortly to those who have expressed an interest. Please let me know if you want to be on that email list.

Rain here today (KSTS) and no flying since Monday. Sunday should be clear so maybe I will get out to one of my breakfast spot!

 OIL FILTRATION

There has been much discussion regarding what type on oil filter to use.

For those that got to see the oil filtration demo @ Fredericksburg, and have been wanting one, I finally now have  the Oil Mag Rod Filter that will fit a Jake in stock.

I have had  a Spin On on my engine for 800 hrs. I installed the Oil Mag Rod Filter 50 hours ago. It was very interesting what  it pull out of the engine @ this oil change.  It will remove particles down to sub- micron ( rouge ) that the filter misses.   We just replace the drain plug with the Oil Mag Rod Filter and it inserts in the screen.  In stock -  $ 276.87 ea. + shipping.  Thats about  1/2 the price of an Airwolf and they don't come anywhere close. If you have any questions, give me a call.

Maintenance

Recently while cleaning out an old barn i found a tin can containing 20 spark plugs.  The plugs are brand new AC manufactured and are still in vacuum packaged containers.  The date on the package states they were packed in 11/60.  My common sense tells me this is November 1960.  (I could be wrong)

The only aircraft I believe my father owned during this time was a Jacobs powered 195.  What resource can I refer to to tell me if in fact these plugs are for a 195 or other??

Sent to me by a friend:

Radium dial check at the border

A Canadian Cessna 170 owner says he was delayed almost three hours on the flight to AirVenture while U.S. authorities
checked his aircraft and his flying partner's Globe Swift, for radioactive material in the instruments. Joe Scoles says his
vintage 170 most likely has radium dials but he was shocked when the TSA official sweeping
his and his partner's Swift with a detector at Port Huron, Mich., told him his aircraft was
just below the limit of detectable radiation allowed in the U.S. He also said that it could have
been impounded if it was above that limit. "That was a real surprise to me," he said.
The Department of Homeland Security announced last year that it would be screening aircraft
coming into the country for radioactive material, but the announcement suggested they
would be looking for nuclear material; Scoles said that's not the impression he got. "They
knew exactly what they were looking for," he said. "They went straight to the panel.

Anybody needing a new 10x3.50-4 tailwheel tire can now get a 6-ply rating Aero Classic tire from Desser with a 550lb rating @ 70psi. It's much more robust than the 4-ply versions. $40 for the tire, tubes are $13.50

After shredding a couple of the 4-ply tires, I'm hoping these will last.

Jacobs & A Late Night Menu .....

I was running the engine on a test stand that was sitting on my driveway.  Boom, all of the sudden a broken Jacobs cylinder lands at my feet where I was pushing the lawnmower.  As I looked back at the still running engine I could see all the internal mechanics of the engine and the case was half full of clean new oil.  Needless to say, I shut the engine down to make repairs.  The next thing I know.....I run into John Barron at Home Depot and ask his advise on repairs.  John is shopping for light bulbs for a chandelier and does not think I should spend the money to repair the engine.............

Stay away from the Peruvian Black Bean soup and never ever mix it with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale just prior to going to bed.  And no matter what the experts say, I dream in color, like 1080 HD color.  Scared the hell outta myself last night.

Old DG

Hi guys, I am assumeing my DG is original, possible overhauled several times but can't find anything in the logs to prove that.  When I pull the knob to match it to the whisky compass, I turn that knob forever to finally find some teeth to mesh and turn it to where I need it to be.  My question is can this be fixed or should i get a new one? It's so bad, I wonder if it's worth fixing?  If a new one is in order, what's the price on these things?  I like things that work correctly and I'm very aggrivated with this DG. Most of the time I just don't bother with it now, and I figure, that's not a solution.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone use a spreadsheet based weight and balance worksheet for their 195 that you'd be willing to share?

I guess I could figure it out from the POH, but if its already been done on a spreadsheet, why bother?

Phillips X/C 25w60 FS

I have I thik 2 cases and 2 gallons (10gal total) of Phillips 25w60 oil that I would like to sell. The oil is 2 years old (still sealed in plastic jugs) so I couldn't return it but if someone is interested in picking it up in Fernandina Beach FL (KFHB) $12 per gal takes it.  This oil is $22 per gal at Spruce and at least $16 per gal elsewhere.  Drew Hughes (904)233-8457

Turbo 195 Exhaust Clamp INFO

Have you ever had that suspicion that there is something that everyone already knows...but you....and you can't seem to figure out what that is?

One very important item with the turbo conversion is to replace the clamp connecting the turbo to the exhaust pipe on a regular basis.  It is not written down anywhere but I can testify that it should be replaced every 300-400 hours. (This is common knowledge to AI/AP's who routinely maintain turbo-charged aircraft.)

I didn't know...years ago mine went to 980 hours before it failed.  It was a good thing it failed when it did as my next flight would have been to Oshkosh.

Bill Maxwell is going through an extensive annual on his turbo 195 and has passed this information to us:

The Cessna part number for the clamp is S1921-1.

Jim at Parts Exchange is a source...call 800-528-0390.  The clamp is used on quite a number of Cessna turbo-charged singles and is not hard to find.  The price at Wipaire is $96.20 and it would likely be more at Yingling Aircraft in Wichita.

Amazingly....the correct torque  (as specified on a new clamp) when attaching the clamp is VERY LOW!  20 Ft Lbs net torque.  It is likely that someone could unknowingly over torque the clamp and thereby encourage cracking to occur.  I will inspect mine today as I would bet that it is overtorqued.

Thank You Bill Maxwell, and may your trials be over! Hope to see you again at OSH.

BIG NEWS

As of February 1, after 8 years and 4 months of waiting on the Hayward t-hangar waiting list,  I now have my own hangar for the plane!

It has been in 9 different hangars, 3 tie-down spots and a grass lot in the last 8.5 years that I have owned it.  Finally a permanent home.

Now I can finally get that beer fridge!

CSI: Miami had an episode on Monday that was a little far-fetched about murder on a commercial spacecraft.  The thing that caught my attention was when the CSI agents were interviewing a helo pilot at the airport.  They kept showing in the background a beautiful dark blue and polished 195, which had absolutely nothing to do with the plot.  Anybody care to 'fess up as to how his/her baby ended up on TV?  The story behind its appearance is probably of interest to the rest of us.
