The International Cessna 195 Club
34th Annual Fly-In, Midland, Texas

Zeus was busy flinging his thunderbolts hither, dither and yon and the weather prognosticators were flummoxed and changing their predictions on the half hour. So as forecast before the fly-in by none other than the Oracle of Delphi, the weather was flyable but challenging. Twenty five Cessna 195s, two Bonanzas and one Seneca braved all and swamped the CAF ramp, parking amidst the fighters and T6/SNJ trainers of WWII vintage making our Cessna 195s at home amongst the round-engined tail draggers.

By all accounts the get-together was a resounding success. We all delighted in seeing old friends and making lots of new ones. The maintenance clinic organized and directed by Bill Milton of The 195 Factory was quite well attended and informative. (Coyle Schwab will report on this separately). The "Save-The-Girls" luncheon and 60th Anniversary celebration of the D-Day invasion highlighted the CAF mission of "LEST WE FORGET" the sacrifices and costs of defending the freedom we all enjoy and sometimes take for granted.

The Cessna 195 tire kicking session amongst our birds was very well received especially by our new members and invaluable sharing took place. We watched one new member with 30 hrs on his new bird fly off with another new member and Cessna 195 flight instructor. "Is this the way it is supposed to taxi and fly?". I watched the smile on his face when he returned: the smile of reassurance!

A short walk from our aircraft to the barbeque rounded out the day. It was as-advertised, "A Cessna 195 Day" and well received by all.

Our Flag and P-51

Saturday was the FINA-CAF AIRSHO and we were not disappointed by the good Colonels of the CAF. It was five hours of non-stop sound and fury.WWII airplanes of all descriptions, fighters, bombers trainers, the Tora Tora Tora re-enactment of Pearl Harbor, and finally the B-29 FIFI and the re-enactment of the event that ended the war. The missing man formation capped an outstanding air show.

Masters of Disaster

We had 77 people attend the Saturday night club banquet. Member Ron Karwacky opened the evening by leading us in the pledge of allegiance and member Larry Bartlett gave the invocation. I was able to share some information about the CAF and the Polikarpov I-16 and Martlet VI (FM2 WILDCAT) and introduce our mechanic Vladimir Yastremski. Vlad is also well known for flying the Antonov 2 from his former home in Almaty Kazakhstan to San Diego.

Jack Jackowski alerted us to the Saint Patrick's Day fly-in scheduled for March 17 in Beaufort SC, Ron Gruner provided an update on our club web site, Gary Jones a founding club member reminisced about the early days of the club and reminded us of our colleagues no longer with us, Ginnie Bartlett had all in attendance introduce themselves and finally Mike Barron and future club president Dillon Barron conducted a drawing for Cessna 195 engraved wine glasses.

Sunday was a very wet day with a very brief air show. Many took advantage of this to visit the CAF American Airpower Heritage Museum, the new Polikarpov traveling exhibit and the Petroleum Museum.

Not everybody was able to leave on Sunday evening but by mid-day Monday most of our Cessna 195s were winging their way home. Some who were pressed for time left their airplanes in hangars at the FBO to be retrieved at a latter day.

Next year the Annual Cessna 195 Fly-In will be in Saratoga New York, the "food lover's paradise and fresh baked goods capital of the world", and will be hosted by Bill Milton of The 195 Factory: See you there.
