POST FLY-IN REPORT The Santa Ynez Airport in the heart of Santa Barbara's wine country has returned to its former quiet laid back best kept secret fly-in hide-away of pre-Cessna 195 Fly-in days. Many of the locals are still lamenting that they did not take up the invite from the Cessna 195 Club to join them in the Big Blow-Out Hangar Party with the famous Bob Hoover as the guest speaker introduced by the local Patriarch, WWII hero, P-38 pilot and Mentor Jim Kunkle Sr. The fly-in hosts are slowly recovering from the severe depression, loneliness, and feelings of utter abandonment from the departure of thirty-five of Cessna's Finest, their pilots, families and friends. However, the lasting impression of this fly-in is the camaraderie of the members of the International Cessna 195 Club that was demonstrated the entire weekend, and especially on Sunday as many aircraft were being pre-flighted for departure. Whenever there is a large gathering of 50+ year old aircraft, there are bound to be maintenance "glitches" that pop up unexpectedly at the most inopportune time. On Sunday, these glitches ranged from low tail wheel struts to a loose prop spinner to a contaminated fuel injection system. Fellow club members eagerly stepped in and assisted the affected aircraft owners with all the tools, parts and expertise required to get these aircraft back in the sky. Those of us who are less proficient in the "art" of maintaining these fine aircraft were treated to valuable demonstrations of "ramp repairs" that included a complete purging of the new type fuel injection system, and the removal and re-installation of the 2B20 propeller in order to remove the faulty spinner's backing plate. The statistics for the 2006 Fly-in were as follows:
Cessna 190s and 195s Everywhere!
The following activities were well attended:
Thanks for coming! It was a memorable event because members of the International Cessna 195 Club committed the time and effort to travel "clear out" to the West Coast to attend. Participation is everything to the success of an event such as this Fly-in. Also, our sincere thanks go out to the small army of volunteers that made our task of Fly-in hosts seem easy. You can still order the following 2006 Fly-in memorabilia:
Please e-mail your interest in these items and any questions to lloyds48s@hotmail.com, and look for up-coming details and order forms on the www.cessna195.org website. In 2007, the International Cessna 195 Club Fly-in and Convention will be hosted by Marvin and Stephanie Huckins in Wichita, Kansas. Watch for details, and register early! A complete financial report and a list of the registered attendees at the 2006 Fly-in will be submitted to the President and Board of Directors of the International Cessna 195 Club. This report respectfully submitted by,
Lloyd and Sharon Sorensen
