Is there any problem/concern in using both TCP and MMO in the fuel? Recently had exhaust valve sticking and wondering if there is a problem mixing. I have only been using TCP occasionally and thought I might start adding it all the time.

Really got in the groove this weekend.

Just got back from a 1414sm roundtrip from Edgewood NM (1N1) to Tehachapi, CA (TSP). Went out on Friday morning, 4.5hrs, 50 gal, 157mph/11.2gph avg, and I really wasn't trying hard. Just cruising along at 10,500' at 1900 rpm/19".

Coming home today, I had to do a bunch of diverts for weather, and still only took 4:40. At times I was doing about 180mph, wheee!

I did notice more Jacobs "burps" on the way home, even though I was using 50*F cooler EGT. I wonder about that, I lean with 100-110F carb heat, was using ~1975rpm on the way home, AvGas (mogas on the way out) lot's of different altitudes with all the weather (up to 13,500'). Probably used 55gal coming home. Didn't gas up afterwards, was raining a little.

Do you guys just stuff alot of extra fuel through the engine to avoid the "burp"? (Like 13 gph at high altitude)? I can't quite figure it out. At 10,500 on the way out, using autogas, hardly had any burps. But then today, probably had 7 or 8 during the flight. The air was colder (but not after I added carb heat), and had more moisture today. Anybody got a good solution (short of fuel injection or burning 15gph!)?

Wiring, continued: I recently discovered that turning my master switch off while the engine is running results in... nothing! All guages and radios stay powered--is this correct? Any cause for worry?

Its strange how things run in streaks, lately its wiring,(3 in one week) mostly in the primary power curcuit, nothing that goes where it should, as a warning, especially when buying a new plane, the ammeter is in the circuit to the battery from the buss, the generator goes thru the master switch and on to the buss, but goes nowhere near the ammeter. The ammeter only reads power to the battery from the buss, and that is why it reads so few amps once the battery is charged. The plane will function wired other ways, but some care should be taken in selecting the correct wire size, and designing the circuit. Once a "mad Scientest" re-designes a system, pity the poor guy who has to figure it all out. The idea of "well I only need a little bit of power so it does not matter where I get it" may work the first time, but soon, you will be paying someone to completely rewire the plane because its less expensive than attempting to figure it all out. Screwing around with the power curcuit and the ignition wiring is not permitted. At the first chance you get, do replace the P lead to the mag and the A+ lead to the coil/ and on down to the points, and connect the shielding just as you found it. The noise suppressor goes in the line to the switch, not the points. Most of these wires are 60 years old, and need replacing, and one other thing, trailer connectors are not a way to power a transponder.

Hello all, I'm going to be joining this happy family of aviators in the next couple of weeks when I close on my new Cessna 195. I've narrowed the search down to two and plan to conduct pre-buys next week. If there are any others out there I should consider, please let me know. I'm looking for a nice one, not a fixer-upper. Young paint and interior preferred. I need all-IFR. I like traditional panels, but prefer Garmin functionality. I'm hoping to find one that's already a keeper, not one that may one day become a keeper! Thanks! Happy flying.

Hello All! Please allow me to introduce myself, My name is Kirk I am a private pilot with 500hrs and 99.9% of that is tailwheel time in a Citabria and most of it in a RV-8 I built. I have been searching for awhile now for a family airplane for weekend trips, I have always been in LOVE with 195s and was wondering if there might be any owners in the Mid-Atlantic region, I could buy lunch and buy some gas and maybe go for a intro flight in a 195 to check it out. I believe it would be a great family airplane but would love to see and feel one in person. Thank You very much for your time! Blue Skies Kirk

I have a favor to ask of all you round motor folks. A friend of mine has a Stearman hangared next to my 195 and he would like to install an oil cooler like the one we have on our airplanes on his Stearman. The airplane has a nine cylinder Lycoming and is cowled with a Beech AT-? cowling. He would like to get his hands on a copy of a 337 of a like installation. If you happen to have a Stearman friend or base airplane handy, please ask them if they are aware of any similar installations and let me know. Thank you.

Hey, all -

Check out the AOPA website to see the long-awaited Cessna 195 article. Instead of paper-only in PILOT, AOPA chose to feature it as a multi-media online article.

Who's the happiest 195 driver?

Must be me. I've put about 40+ hours on 195BL in the past three weeks. Trip from Dallas to OSH with a full plane of family and gear, and this weekend a flight from Dallas to San Diego with the same stuff. Plus lots of local stuff.

We cruised across the desert at high altitude (12K) and it was delightful. Afternoon departure from Las Cruces wasn't like my performance at sea level (8000 foot density altitude), but she climbed up and away just like the charts said it would...slowly and reliably and in control

Landings have been fun and fine. I thought transition from my RV6 to 195BL would be a little tricky, but all my past 250 hours are in taildraggers and this one flies as honest as any of them. Crosswind gear is a blast. Three point, wheel landings are very honest...

New engine from Pete Jones is just fantastic. I have no leaks....none. Burns about 1 quart every 6-7 hours. Fuel consumption is about 13-14 gph in cruise like the rest of you get.

Thanks to John Barron, whose team did most of the restoration work to make this look like it rolled off the line in 1952. It's a fine ship.

And special thanks to Jim McClain, an excellent stick and experienced 195 CFI. I am a better pilot in any plane for having flown with him. For those of you asking about 195 instruction and transition, call Jim.

I've got an improvised tool I will keep in my 195 from here on out. It is a 2ounce plastic syringe on which I put a short piece of fuel line. It can be used to easily suck the oil out of an oil filled cylinder. Just remove the spark plug, insert the hose, and suck out the oil. I used it recently and it worked like a charm. Cylinder number 5 was oil filled, and I used this to pull out 8 ounces of oil! It was my first real hydraulic lock, so it was right exciting. Had a pretty dry start after that. I've linked a photo of my improvised suction tool- perfect for traveling. Anyway, just my latest Hint from Heloise for your consideration.

Just another couple of reason why I love my 195 - I am a photographer in NYC and I had a job upstate near Albany to shoot a house interior. It would have been a 3 hour drive each way. The owner of the house was a friend, and it turned out the house was minutes away from a beautiful grass strip Kline Kill airport in Columbia County. I could load all my lighting, grip equipment and cameras into the 195 and was there in a short time. There is no better feeling than to arrive in such style! That was last week - today I was giving rides to some junior members (and their parents) of my soaring club. Some very talented young pilots, who understand the beauty and grace of a real airplane like the 195. It is a privilege to be able to share it with others.

My stall warning sending unit will not fire off in the air regardless of speed or configuration. It works fine in pre-flight. We have tried various tricks to have it work in flight, but to no avail. An A&P familiar with 195s suggested a 170 or 180 sending unit be placed in the wing, but he wasn't sure if there was an STC for that. Anyone else have this problem? and any suggestions for solutions?? Thanks

Can I get some recommendations from people for insurance brokers or companies?

I am interested in a limited commercial use policy to conduct aerial photography and tours under the 91.147 exemption. I'm thinking insurance may be a major obstacle to this endeavor. Any information from those with specific experience in the area relating to insurance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello Everyone:

I want to say thanks to all of you who I have met and talked to in the past couple of years. Your comments, thoughts, advice, help and warnings were greatly appreciated and very important to me. I gleaned a lot of information from you all and have finally used that knowledge to purchase an airplane.

Ray and Thelma Woodmansee have trusted me to take over the ownership of their airplane N1063D. Bill Milton and Jeff Pearson were invaluable their insight and knowledge and helped me decide which airplane to purchase. Jeff and I traveled to Porterville in early July to meet with Ray and inspect the aircraft. After a full day inspecting the airplane in 110ºF and a test flight I knew this was the airplane for me.

The airplane is in Chino and leaves for the 195 Factory on August 25. Bill Milton will give it his attention and make sure everything is good order before it starts its way to Calgary sometime in late September or October. I dont think it will make it to Fredericksburg although I hope to be there regardless. Well have to see what happens.

Anyway thanks for all your help, the wait was worth it! I intend to take care of Ray and Thelmas plane and keep it flying for a long time.

As Bill Milton said, Now the fun begins!

Regards

Brian Byl Calgary, Alberta

Greetings...I was looking through the photo gallery and came across pictures of the wreck of N2258, a float plane that crashed at Deer Lake , NY in 1969. The pilot was Buss Byrd. As a young boy, we vacationed for many summers at Eagle Bay, NY (4th Lake) where Bud and Chuck Windhausen had a pair of 195's docked. Byrd was on 7th Lake, if I remember correctly. I wonder if N2258 was one of Windhausens planes? I remember 52 years ago, at age 6, waking up to the sound of one of those Jakes coming to life. The last time I was at 4th Lake was maybe 1965. I got my sea plane rating a few years ago in Florida (Maule M7) and my childhood dream of flying a floatplane finally came true. If anyone has any knowledge of the Windhausen brothers from about 1965 on, I'd like to talk to you.

I'm an interested 190 buyer and would like to connect with any owners in the south Florida area. I live in Vero Beach (VRB).

I would also be interested in a local 190 familiarization flight and would be willing to compensate for any costs associated.

My interest is to become a long-term 190 owner for personal pleasure, family vacations, etc.

I am an ATP currently active as a professional pilot for a major fractional operator.

Thanks.

I was visiting with my local shop for the obligatory Friday night closing, and noticed that Cessna had dropped off a few 195 seat track service kits (he is a cessna partner shop). I went back today to schedule the install in my ship and he mentioned that he could see the AD coming by next year to mandate this installation, mainly due to the huge number of skyhawks, skylanes, 210s, ect with the long track travel Cessna is famous for. Point is that once an AD comes out, the free kits will no longer be available. Would our club expert shops agree? I was thinking about the right seat as well, but there is another kit sitting in the box if anyone wants to schedule into SUA, Stuart Fl.
